Afghans love their bread… It is the one thing that is always served at the dinning table. It is served with most meals and is generally torn into shreds and used by those eating to envelope curries. It is even served with rice… Believe it or not Some people love eating bread even with rice… And Afghan Sweet bread (Rot Afghani) is everyone favorite …served after food…breakfast or whenever u crave something sweet…What makes the afghan sweet bread(Rot Afghani) special is the addition of Black Caraway seeds and Poppy seeds on top. The bread is given a unique shape by using a fork to make holes in it … afghan sweet bread  (Rot Afghani) is always served with some hot cardamom tea. Tea is drunk a lot throughout the day on any day by Afghans. It is a big part of hospitality in Afghanistan…A guest is always offered some tea and made feel welcome. There are many health benefits to using cardamom on a regular basis. Cardamom has antibacterial and therapeutic effects. To add it in a tea, you can scoop out the seeds out of cardamom and crush them gently or grind it in a ​spice grinder or a coffee grinder.

What you need to make Afghan Sweet Bread (Rot Afghani)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 tbsp, Yeast (For better results Yeast is mixed with 1/2 tsp sugar in warm water before adding it to the mixture

  • 1 cup, vegetable oil

  • 1 cup, sugar

  • 1/2 tsp, baking powder

  • 1 tbsp, minced Cardamom

  • 3 cups, Flour

  • Sprinkle of Black Caraway Seeds

  • Sprinkle of Poppy Seeds

How to Make Afghan Sweet Bread (Rot Afghani)

Directions

  •   In a bowl add milk, eggs, yeast, cooking oil, sugar, baking powder and minced cardamom. For better results, Yeast is first mixed with sugar in warm water then added to the mixture.
  •   Mix all the ingredients well with a hand mixer or electronic mixer.     
  • Once all your ingredients are mixed well, start adding the flour until you get a soft dough
  • knead dough for few minutes
  • Cover the dough with a plastic cover
  • Put a piece of clothing on it and leave it for at least 3 hours
  • On a pan for baking, shape the dough into a big round shape
  • Give it a unique shape by making holes in it using a fork
  • Sprinkle Black Caraway seeds and Poppy seeds on top
  • Bake it for 30 minutes
  • Polish it with egg yolk and milk mixture to give it a good shine (optional)
  • Put it back in the oven and bake for another 5 minutes
  • Cut it up into small pieces and serve it with Some hot cardamom tea

  • Boil water
  • Add black Or green tea in a tea pot
  • Grind Cardamom in a ​spice grinder or a coffee grinder and add it to tea pot
  • Brew it with hot boiling water
  • Serve hot in a cup
