Shalghum bhutta Sticky Rice with turnips – Afghan Food Recipes
Shalghum Bhatta is one of my favorite dishes. You can make it with or without meat. Here we will cook it without meat. So excited to share this delicious recipe. Here are all the ingredients you need:
¼ cup cooking oil
4 onions, chopped
1 kg meat ( veal or lamb)
3 cups water
1 Cup tomato sauce
1 ginger, minced
6 turnips, chopped
2 cups water

And for spices you need:
1 tbsp, Turmeric powder
1 tbsp, coriander powder
1 tbsp, salt
1 tsp, Red Spice
3 tbsp brown sugar

Chop the turnips and onions and mince the ginger.

Directions
- Add cooking oil in a pressure cooker.
- Add chopped onions and let it fry until it is golden brown.
- Add meat veal or lamb and mix well.
- Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, salt, red spice and mix well.
- Add water and mix well.
- Close the pressure cooker and Cook 10 minutes on high and 30 minutes on low.
- Open the pressure cooker and add tomato sauce and mix well.
- Add brown sugar and mix well.
- Add minced ginger and mix well.
- Add chopped turnips and mix well.
- Close the pressure cooker and cook for 10 minutes on high and 20 minutes on low.
- Open the pressure cooker and serve in a bowl with rice and fresh veggies.

Rice
Ingredients:
1 ½ cup sweet rice
4 cups water
¼ cup cooking oil
1 tbsp salt
1 tbsp cumin
½ tbsp cardamom
Directions:
- In a bowl, wash sweet rice.
- Soak it in water for few hours or over night.
- In a pressure cooker, add washed and soaked sweet rice.
- Add water, cooking oil, salt, cumin and cardamom and mix well.
- Close the pressure cooker and cook for 10 minutes on high and 20 minutes on low.
- Open the pressure cooker and serve hot in a plate with turnips and fresh veggies.
